Above Rubies (1)

The ruby is a tough, prized, and beautiful gem. The only natural gemstone harder than the ruby is the diamond.

It’s very interesting that in the Bible, an excellent wife of noble character is considered to be worth far more than rubies. While the description was originally fitted for a wife, I believe it can be suitable for a virtuous woman of any age. Our true worth is not in our material possessions or physical beauty, but in the price that Christ paid for you and me, which is far more expensive than anything in this world. Rubies are generally red in color, and that reminds us of the blood that Jesus Christ shed for us!

Sister, we must know our true value in Christ. No matter how society views you, remember that you are beautiful. You are precious. You are strong.

Here are some of the characteristics of a virtuous woman as listed in Proverbs 31:

1. She is trustworthy (v11). Her character reflects the character of the God who created her. She keeps promises, lives with integrity, and performs to her best ability whatever task is entrusted to her.

2. She is a blessing to other people (v12, 20). She brings good, not harm. She's selfless and determined to be of help. She takes care of her family but does not neglect helping others.

3. She is strong and industrious (vv13-17). She works hard and makes intelligent decisions for her family. She takes care of their needs and doesn't hesitate to make sacrifices if needed. She spends and invests hard-earned money wisely. She is always up to the task, which means she's physically fit and emotionally strong to bear burdens and overcome challenges.

"A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies." ~ Proverbs 31:10 NIV

Dear God, thank you for the value that you placed in me. When I am insecure about how I look, remind me that I am fearfully and wonderfully made in Your likeness. When I am scared and scarred, remind me that I am tough. When I doubt my true worth, remind me of the price Christ paid to set me free. I lift up to You the women who are still treated as second-class citizens and are often the subject of abuse and cruelty. Remember them, O God and rescue them with your righteous right hand and lift them up to their true value in You. Amen.
